Sony Xperia S is the first android phone with a 12MP rear camera. For that matter, Sony fans around the world is eager to know what the Xperia S's rear shooter can deliver. Finally, some sample photos emerge. Sadly, the images does not cope with the fact that it's from a 12MP camera; they appear grainy. Anyway, it is a bit of a relief that the photos (3.5MB average size) are not so over compressed as in the 2011 Xperias.

The phone has not been released yet and Sony confirms its availability by March 2012. So, there is a 2 months time for the company to rethink and fine tune the camera. It's evident that the hardware is capable (Sony has the best cameras in the market) but the software needs some minor tweaking.

Some of the samples:

Not that strange as long the size of the sensor is not increasing.

Increasing mega pixels doesn't matter, what matters the most is size of the sensor. Nokia N8 has much better camera. Its really sad that even though Sony has great cameras but they don't put good enough in their phones. :(

Bigger sensor would mean bigger phones.

I think people rather get a phone that fits in your pocket and a bit less camera quality than a great camera but a brick of a phone(k850 for example)

@joost206: My dear Nokia N8 has a larger camera sensor than normal, but still its just 12.9mm thick, still much slimmer than K850 (17mm)

the large sensor can fit in the phones as the size is merely smaller than the nail of your pinkie...see the newly announced NOKIA 808 pureview which is having the sensor size(1/1.2") greater than all the p&s cameras and most of professonal compact cameras except some..is having best camera quality in phones till now and better than all point and shoot cameras and most prof. compact. see the size on wikipedia than u can find haow small it is needed for awesome pics.
