Some non-smartphone Nokia S40 phones can use it too.

Edit: Ah, I see you already find that out ;)

That app is protected either by checking certificates on the phone, or checking the phone info, or could be both.
If you can find the original .jad file of it (not created yourself) maybe you'll find something, if not, then unpack the .jar file and do some research in every class file.

Is there any advantage of using 'Whatsapp' over 'Nimbuzz' or any other java client?
If it doesn't enable you to use features such as 'VOIP' or 'SIP' on feature phones than don't brag over it.
Don't waste your time & use any other client such as 'eBuddy' or 'Nimbuzz' to get all those features.

Why else would you want this app to work for your phone?.....

Do you know what whatsapp is?

It's a messenger chatting client. Just like 'Nimbuzz', 'Fring' etc.
As with all the java versions such as 'Fring' which is available as 'Mini Fring'.
I beleive that this must also be a modded down version.
The features that they would showcase for 'Android', etc won't working for there Java version.
So, that's why I just asked, that if it is not enabling anything extra other than the already available clients. Then why would you need to get it enabled on Java mobile?
Just use an alternative!
