I just want to know if anybody can explain what are kernels. What are the advantages of modding them. Do i have to unlock the boot loader or rooting enough ? Is it firmware and device dependent ? I want to know for Xperia Arc

Kernel is a bridge between the hardware and the software.

Some kernels include features such as overclock/underclock/different schedulers/volume boosts etc

Yes, they are.

Can u recommend a kernel that is good for volume boost. Is it true that if i unlock the boot loader i cannot claim the warranty ?
