Quick tutorial for unlocking new Xperia devices. Although there is one on the SE developer website, this thread can be used for users to discuss their problems during unlocking etc.

Warning! This procedure will wipe the /data partition of your phone.

1. Download:
-fastboot package: http://www.multiupload.com/BMJ24IL6XY
-x86/x64 drivers: http://www.multiupload.com/0XZV1LXRVA
2. Go to: http://unlockbootloa...om/instructions
3. At the bottom click 'Continue' and enter your IMEI (type *#06# to find out), name and email address
4. You should now receive your unique unlock key
5. Extract fastboot.rar and open fastboot folder
6. Hold SHIFT and right click on the background of the folder
7. Select 'Open command window here'
8. Connect your phone in fastboot mode (turn phone off, hold menu (search for PLAY) button and plug in USB Cable)
9. In the cmd windows type in fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version
10. If a value is returned, it means the phone is correctly connected
11. Type in fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce oem unlock 0xKEY and replace KEY with the key provided in step 4.
12. You're device should now be bootloader unlocked

For any users on OS X rather than windows, Fastboot for OS X can be found here

"fastboot.exe" will need to be replaced with "fastboot-mac"  in terminal

There is no need to download the SE driver mentioned on SE developer page.

I just tried this on my brand new Xperia PLAY that's locked with my carrier, Rogers. But after entering the first command in the CMD window, it just hangs displaying <waiting for device>. I was trying this earlier from the SE Developer site, but I had no idea what they were talking about when they mentioned fastboot because they never provided a download link for it. So I already have Andriod SDK installed along with the Google USB Drivers. Any idea what I could be doing wrong and how to fix it so that I can unlock my bootloader on my locked Xperia PLAY?

BTW, I have SE PC Companion installed already when trying all this, would I need to uninstall it first for this to work?

Your phone must be SIM Free for this to work. Use Gingerbreak if you want root access :).

LOL that solution is so simple, it's been a while since that last time I modded my old W810i that I never thought of that being the problem. Funny that they don't even mention that on the SE Developer site. Thanks! :)

EDIT: I just tried it without the SIM card inserted and it still hangs at <waiting for device>???

No, not without the SIM card. The phone must be bought straight from Sony Ericsson. Phones bought from network operators do not have fastboot mode.

You can use Gingerbreak instead though. Although it won't let you flash custom images, you will still get root access :)

Where can I find Gingerbreak or a tutorial, I just did a google search and nothing relevant came up?

Its an APK: copy it to your memory card, then install and run the app.

You wont need to use SDK tools

So I was able to install the GingerBreak APK using Fast Installer that I downloaded from the Market. Followed the instructions on the XDA Developers Forums thread, installed Superuser from the Market and enabled USB Debugging in Settings. But when trying to ROOT my Xperia PLAY with the GingerBreak app it just hangs in the process and never reboots, so it was unsuccessful for me. :(

I just unlocked my Xperia PLAY using a Network Unlock Code that I purchased from Theunlock.ca. But I'm guessing, even though it's network unlocked now, my device still doesn't have Fastboot installed because it was originally locked and probably still won't be able to unlock my bootloader, correct? Cause I just want to get rid of all the junk files, apps and loading screen that my carrier included with it. :(

You should debrand it to get rid of operator junk. No need to unlock the bootloader just get generic FW and flash with FlashTool :).

Check this: http://forum.xda-dev...d.php?t=1048422

It's R800i firmware, but the baseband should be unified so it should work fine on R800a.

Cool, thanks again man! :)

I'll give this a try.

EDIT1: Before I go ahead and flash my phone to debrand it, will it totally wipe out the contents on my microSD card? Please let me know.

EDIT2: Nevermind, I read a little more on the XDA forums and found out that it's a good idea to wipe out everything.

EDIT3: So I was able to successfully debrand with FlashTool and Root my PLAY with GingerBreak!

Thanks for the support. :)
