Did you use a root enabled file manager? If not then the  original files will not be overwritten and hence nothing changes

Aha, I see, these are all have open type tables in them (I cannot add those), but that still don't explain why your backups don't work?

Apart from the boxes most fonts I've used have worked fine, and all from this thread have worked perfectly for me, granted not all look too great when installed but I've yet to have any real issues when changing fonts.

Do the top title bars and clock work ok for you with Sony Sketch?

Something went wrong with mine but even more bizarre is why they won't return now even with the default files.

Btw, FYI: My X10 Mini messes up sometimes, lose font in the status-bar, time also messes up like Miks and I have to restart the device to fix it

Yes, as I said before though no amount of reboots resolves this now. I know I can reset the device to get it back, it's just a mystery as to why it happens

Has anyone tried replacing the fonts on 2.1 yet?

I haven't. I was considering it but seeing as I lost elements of text every time on Donut I am now less likely to bother ;)

How do we have to set the permissions in Root Explorer when we replace the fonts?
And do the old fonts from this thread work with 2.1?

EDIT:
The fonts from this thread worked.
