Looking smoother now, more like the standard you'd expect from a retail handset.
I'm leaning towards this over the Nexus One and perhaps on a par with the HTC Desire

Oh yes I very much agree but there is also the size to consider, the X10 is pretty big but I'll reserve judgment until it's in my hand.
Also the Desire has that optical track pad which is pretty cool and of course we know that Sense UI is excellent.

It doesn't look bigger than would be expected to house a gargantuan 4" screen though

But the inches of screen shouldn't really make it fatter

Well I was unsure as to which dimension was defined as fat, especially seeing as it's less than 1mm thicker than an iPhone and is actually thinner than an HTC Magic. Doesn't sound too fat to me
