A friend of mine found an aino somewhere on a parking lot, turns out the thing is locked, and he says he read somewhere that the authorities can trace the location of the mobile phone, even without the sim inserted, in case of theft, through the gps...

Truth or nonsense?

We dare not touch it before we know, though we found it, we prefer to keep the cops out...

That's the phone I lost in the Parking today. No just kidding

They can detect the phone even without SIM. Its truth. Also they can disable the phone so you can't use it anymore. Since your friend found the phone then the owner knows he "lost" it, so he probably won't go to say that it was stolen. Also they can detect it with GPS but they will need software installed into the phone (I guess).

Yeah well, I was just wondering, the code or serial number, or whatever "adress" they would need to track it or shut it down, could this be changed?

They only need IMEI number. There aren't such tools to change it. Also Sony Ericsson can change IMEI , if (for example) you had a device which had warranty and you lost the device, they will give you another device and they will restore your old IMEI for the warranty to exist on the other phone too.

I personally think you won't have any problem with this Aino ;)

Er no I think thats more what insurance is for, and its also down to your network provider to stop the phone from working by you giving them the IMEI number
