Hi,

I'm thinking of buying my wife a Sony Ericsson W995 or the AINO but wanted to know a few things
with regards to their functionality and features:

1. Are you able to install 3rd-party applications such as Google Maps, Google Latitude,
Facebook, Windows Live Messenger (MSN Messenger)?

2. Is it possible to sync the phone's calendar with Microsoft Outlook, either via a cable or over-the-air?

3. Do the phones support POP email (push mail)?

I would be grateful for any kind feedback or "real world" experiences in using the above features :-)

Many Thanks!

Chiswick.

As far as I know, W995 has POP email push thingy, it works with gmail. I've tried it.
With Aino it must have it too, as it doesn't make se-nse that :se: would remove it. ;)

Thanks to all the responses.

What if the email is POP and not gmail? My wife has her own email domain (e.g. firstname@mydomain.co.uk)...

If ur interested in the Aino .... I highly recommend you wait for a firmware update.

Having used the Aino myself I've largely felt the Aino to be an incomplete product. So its not exactly worth the $$$ over the W995 yet .....

Hey buddy... I had the same problem as you in choosing between an Aino and W995. Aino has the latest software BUT even the sony salesperson and not one but both of them in the mobile section of Sony world recommended the W995 over the Aino since the Aino is the "first of the unified models" meaning that it has quite a few problems to sort out. Something else was the fact that the aino doesn't have an image stabilizer and 3d sound which the W995 does. However, the Aino comes bundled with the bluetooth stand for which your mileage may vary. Also, having personally tried the touchscreen of Aino, I was quite disappointed with a lot of quirks which the aino had. So I ended up buying the W995 which might have older software but is much more stable and overall more fun!

Ur talking to exact opposite. Aino doesnt have the latest software infact its still on its first FW .... Thats why Im asking the TC to wait. That way if the Aino gets updated it might be a worthy buy.

Right now the Aino has a long way to go for its bugs to be fixed ....

No I actually meant that Aino has the new interface.... and also includes the Walkman v4. Was never talking about the firmware. And I would say Aino 2 would be a first day purchase rather than the Aino.

Aino camera is worse, it doesn't even have simple settings, that the W995 has.

Yikes! :o

:good: So many conflicting messages! All very confusing. I suppose a subsequent firmware update would fix some of the Aino issues...?

Many thanks for all your kind responses! Much appreciated.

@chiswick
Exactly .... wait for a firmware update, that alone should push the Aino ahead of the W995.....

@ Lolly
I've tried both the phone cameras but couldnt find any difference. But according to experts the Aino one is better becoz there is no purple fringing .... :)

I went to Carphone Warehouse yesterday and the general consensus was that the W995 was a more robust and reliable phone. So the wife is now enamoured with the W995! Both the Aino and W995 seem to be good phones. But we played with the Aino and it was a little sluggish.

By the way: Carphone Warehouse have now suspended the Satio until further notice! They've had so many complaints and issues and feel it's not a handset that warrants a place within their store.

I'm able to sync my phone's calendar with the Outlook calendar using Sony ericsson PC suite. Works on all SE phones. Also works for notes and contacts on SE<->Outlook.

Chiswick,
I spent some time at the Sony Ericsson gallery, twice. so-
Major difference is that sluggishness. Aino has a plastic body. And W995 has the metal housing, which feels robust.
Aino's big screen feels good but the touch screen oprations are only reserved for the Media menu. Rest of the things, eg typing setting, etc has to be done through the slide out buttons & Dpad. It has no stereo speakers like W995.
But the bluetooth thing and cradle is a lot appreciated one. They say that its bluetooth has powerful lossless sound output. Aino's wide screen is perfect to view the wide videos, that appear small in W995 due to its non wide screen.

Aino is already into mass advertisement sessions. Which means, SE wont keep its issue ignored. The next firmware update will clear all the glitches I think.
So Aino is attractive for some extra things like the bluetooth and 3" 'limited touch' screen. But if you need over all great performance and sturdy feeling, go for the W995. They both include the HPM77 earphones, which are very great.
Your wife seems thoughtful about the feel of the phone, so I think you must be thinking of the W995(which does not have that multipurpose bluetooth docking station), but comes with an accessory MS410 External loudspeaker which will prove as a 'Wife Attractive' feature.
good luck.

Both the phones are useless for the price in which they are being offered....rather go for Yari...which is very much under budget and offers all three things you require...
Also Yari has a VERY stable firmware and cpu speed is very good...try using it at Carphone Warehouse.....u'll feel the difference and also that YARI has the Walkman 4.0 which W995 lags..
In this price range it offers an excellent 5 MP camera and your wife too would like the White-Red combination of the phone....

It all depends upon what his wife have read and over heard about the fascination of phone models. And they were W995 & Aino, and their appearance. Its a gift compensated with his wife's knowledge and fascination. Showing her a Yari as third option(in the name of budget, function and usability) would make her think outside the act of Chiswick's gesture of heartfelt gifting, that would rather change the whole image similar to industrial compromise.

Good luck and happiness for Chiswick and his wife.
