If you have some third party .apk files to install on your Android here is an easy installation method. With InstallAPK you can simply double click on an .apk file on your Windows PC and it will be installed to the phone via USB.

Instructions:
On the phone tick "Unknown Sources" in Settings > Applications.
Download, extract and install the Setup .exe.

Attached File  Setup.installAPK.zip   683.9K   2770 downloads

Download, extract and install the usbdrivers if you don't already have ADB set up.

Attached File  usbdriver.zip   3.14MB   1958 downloads

(NB: ADB isn't necessary to use InstallAPK)
Once installed, .apk files should show an Android file icon.
Double click an .apk to install to a connected phone.

Wouldn't it be much easier to use an app like "apps installer" or "Astro" file manager? and you should also specify that this method is not linux or mac....

Thanks for posting this. I was using Linda FileManager to install apk's and took so much time to connect my HTC Hero to PC , enable USB Transfer , send the apk , eject the usb from pc and phone , wait 20 seconds for memory stick to sync , open Linda FileManager , go to the folder with the apk , press on it , install it and finally RUN IT :p

For the record; I have to extract and install this file to my PC and not my phone (X10)?!

Yes it is for the PC. Are you saving the archive and not just trying to open it from your browser's temporary folder?

I have just tested it again and it not only working fine with WinRar but also with Windows Explorer!
try right clicking the zip file and choosing Open With > Windows Explorer. From there you should see the .exe which you can then run or drag out to another location.

Must be something with the computer. Tried everything you suggested but without any results. Thanks for the effort.

Kicked my windows internet explorer, installed google chrome et voila: now it works! Thanks again for the effort.
