It's been a long time coming but TomTom's and Garmin's worst nightmare is officially here in the shape of Google Maps Navigation, a turn-by-turn navigation app from Google (obviously).

Here are some of the key features of this software:

  • Turn-by-turn voice guidance

  • Automatic rerouting

  • 3D view

  • Traffic view

  • Satellite view

  • Street view

  • Voice search

  • Automatic map updates

Google Maps Navigation will ship with Android 2.0 devices, the first of which being the Motorola Droid but unfortunately for us in Europe it will be US only to begin with. Check out the presentation video below and see what you think, personally I'd suggest selling your TomTom shares pretty sharpish.

Looks really cool!

Hopefully the actual version won't suck up too much battery life when used!

If only the Android phones didn't cost so much along with the related data plans!

Doubt it :p... but no one would ever use latitude here... that is way too creepy! Unless it ran in the background and was integrated into the facebook app that everyone has!

So choosing to run Latitude is too creepy, presumably because people can see where you are? Yet if it ran in the background and did the same thing it wouldn't be creepy? ;)
