According to PCWorld, Micro-USB is now the official phone charging port, at least in Europe. These companies have currently pledged support for micro-USB:

  • Apple
  • LG
  • Motorola
  • NEC
  • Nokia
  • Qualcomm
  • RIM (Research in Motion)
  • Samsung
  • Sony Ericsson
  • Texas Instruments

So, will Sony Ericsson continue to use FastPort for data and power and just throw in a micro-USB charger as well or is micro-USB going to be used for all its data and power needs?

Size comparison between USB and micro-USB:

I guess that it'll be used the same way as the Fastport has been used up until now. My Samsung J700 used MicroUSB and it's nicer to use then the Fastport imo.

Also, having 2 types of connections on a phone is kinda useless. It would make the phone bloated with connection ports.
I'm glad that they've made MicroUSB the new standard.

If I remember correctly, this agreement will come into effect in 2010. It was about time...

 at existence of Sony Ericsson...
sad reality :(

Those pins get sooo dirty after a year or two(meaning Fast port). Anyone had any bad experience with micro-usb ports yet?
wrt to dying after a while?

I've only had my Magic for a month or two now, so far it has done GREAT. I carry it in the pouch I got with it so there's only a small amount of dust in it... It's a extUSB, enhanced miniUSB. miniUSB still fits but extUSB fits much tighter. Even when using a miniUSB its still better than the wobbly fastports.

My mom's W580i FastPort has gone the way of the dodo as confirmed last week trying to put some flash menus on. :(

USB FTW! I haven't heard of a micro/mini implentation of USB 3.0, but that might be available by 2012, lol.
