Folks at fring said in their forum that the G900 version of their app will be available soon. That was bout two months ago and still ppl are waitin, same as me

So I did something about it. In other words, I modified the original fring_UIQ.sis, removing the conditions preventing the app from being installed on other UIQ3 phones than those available on fring.com. If you want the process in full (not a very long one btw) let me know.

Here is a quick guide on how to get fring running on I assume any UIQ3 phone. That means free calls over the net:)

Tested only on G900 using the faster alternative CapsSwitch and SwissManager.

I am not responsible for any damage that may arise from this guide.

Step 1.

Hack UIQ as instructed here
OR
use the much simpler and faster method using CapsSwitch provided here

Step 2.

With CapsSwitch installed, run it and press "Switch" in order to get "Capabilities are switched OFF" (in fact this is the last step in hacking UIQ. I put it here so that you dont forget.)

Step 3.

Download & Install
SwissManager
OR
get X-plorer

Step 4.

Download & Extract  installserver.zip (36.08K)
Number of downloads: 469

Step 5.

Copy installserver.exe onto your phone, remembering the location.

Step 6.

Open up SwissManager or X-Plorer and find installserver.exe ; copy it.

Step 7.

Go to the directory c:\sys\bin and paste it here.

Step 8.

Exit the application.

Step 9.

On PC, download & extract  fring_G900.zip (391.26K)
Number of downloads: 643

Step 10.

Transfer fring_G900.sis onto your phone, install it and enjoy

Hi have a problem. after following instrultions i try to strart fring. it just says trying connection faild to establish retry? i am now on my phone so i know that connection works. just wondering if any one else has same problem? great effort fixing fring really good of you thx!

followed every step in the guide to the letter, again this accures in the installation phase.

Yup thats the main thing that got it workin. I really dont see why the fring dev team couldnt do that for us
In fact I didnt bother removing the .txt files from the .sis .. must have happened when i built it, maybe coz i removed reference to the two files in the .pkg (the IF statements)

As to the M610i, u sure bout the model? Thought it wasnt out If you actually did test it on there, what was the prob? Did it install at all? Do other apps install normally on it?

Are you connecting via WiFi? For me, WiFi works fine but just tested via GPRS and having probs. Gonna search around later on. Ile post here if I get it workin or find somethin interestin .

Was searchin round on the fring forums and found out that fring actually doesnt work with WAP. So thats that for the GPRS, unless u have a data plan i guess. Im guessin its the same for 3G.

So fring works with either WiFi or with a data plan.

That seems pretty close to "Certificate information could not be understood". One condition that causes this error is when you have the file "00000001" in a wrong directory. Double check this (again i suppose..but just to make sure one more time:P). Im sure theres many more reasons why it would show up. Hope you get it to run.

I followed stricitly all the step-by-step instructions (file 00000001 triple checked in the correct directory - c:\resource\swicerstore\dat). But when I try to install the fring.sisx file in the phone I get a "security information: Component failed security check - cannot install". When I tap details:

I noticed that in the swiss manager in the name of the "00000001" file after the 1 there's a dot. The file's name is actually "00000001." there... and i can't neither delete it, nor rename it...

by the way.. my firmware version is R6J825...

The Sis installer mod which did the job on my phone is "SIS installer mod for Symbian 9.1 Version 1.1 (22 May 08)". That is obviously the solution for the "Certificate information could not be understood" problem.

I'm using gprs connection without a data plan from the operator ("GSM only" ----> 3G switched off in the phone). Haven't tested it on Wi-Fi yet...
