I think 100*100 is fine! :) It saves bandwidth for both the forum and people with limited internet access.

Not only does it save bandwidth but, on most posts, a person's avatar and their personal info down the side of the page is actually longer than what they've posted, so making the avatars larger would make the posts longer, meaning more unnecessary scrolling to read a thread.

Don't think it's going to happen I'm afraid.

100x100 is already larger than many other forums allow and is easily enough to allow some detail in the image.
In comparison the restrictions at m-r are "The maximum size of your custom image is 50 by 50 pixels or 13.7 KB (whichever is smaller)." which means the avatars are pretty poor as you can see by the loss of quality and detail in mine.

Default size of avatar (100x100) is just fine. You can put so much detail in this size.
Also other sites have restrictions about their size and resolution.
So this size is great with me.
Regards.

But also there is an unnecessary gap under Member No. or Mobile with short posts.
Unnecessary scrolling :)

Precisely - and making the avatars bigger (which we're all agreed is unnecessary anyway) would only add to that gap.

@ lynott

assuming you mean the same gap as step666 is talking about i.e. the one arrows in the picture below, the only way to remove it would be to reduce the size or amount of content in the profile details to the left.

i've found sites with really evil avator limits e.g www.seusers.com i can't find a avator small enough
se-nse's avator limit is fine.

cool we have little warning bars never knew that.

I also think 100 x 100 pixels is just fine, but if it was to be changed, then it's possible to change it to i.e. 100 x 150 pixels, so the avatar gets wider, but won't produce even longer gaps.

The only thing with that is that if the fairly-strict limitation on page widths was kept, then a wider avatar would make the space posts appear in thinner, meaning they'd take up more room vertically.
This wouldn't matter too much on shorter posts as there's already the dead space that has been discussed but on longer posts that have no dead space, it would have an effect.

Well, these images are 120 pixels wide, so in theory avatars could be that wide without interfering as well.

I was wondering if anyone would notice that ;)

@ Mizzle

yeah, it should be possible to make avatars wider without affecting the rest of the page. I think square avatars are popular though.

if you make it 120X120 its big enough for almost everything you might want to put in an avatar

@ lynott

If you have a look at the screenshot I attached above you'll see that the warning meter takes up some of that space, of course that is invisible to users. There is though still a single line gap of space between that and the text above it, perhaps Ixalon can assess whether that line at least can be trimmed.
