Hi, my name is Bob....and I'm a noob. "Hi Bob." I'm a noob at phone flashing and would like to quit, to stop being a noob, but I'm not ready to go cold turkey. I need your help.

I will preface by saying I have read so many threads on this subject that my head has been spinning for weeks on this subject. I'm finally breaking down and asking for some clarification before I pull the trigger.

I have read Da_G's guide over on HowardForums, only to find his method is reportedly a bit outdated. My research has brought me to XS++ 3.1, which seems like it just may be my one-size-fits-all tool that I need right now. I have a Red 49 phone.

Here's what I'd like to do:

  • Keep most of Cingular's setup, i.e. NOT debrand the phone fully.
  • Unlock the hidden features, such as the activity menu, flash themes, etc.
  • Change the camera driver & accoustics to get a louder earpiece volume.

It seems to me that I 1. Keep Cingular's MAIN, i.e. W810_R4EA031_MAIN_CINGULAR_RED49.mbn

Can I:
2. I keep Cingular's FS, i.e. W810_R4ED001_FS_AMERICA_2_RED49.fbn?
3. I use FSX to upload some of my own customizations to the phone. I'm a little shaky on this detail. Perhaps I first need to extract the tpa, etc. contents off my phone? Can I take the directory structures I have (courtesy of Da_G) and put that straight onto the phone after backing up my current? Is that a "custom pack"?

I very much appreciate any help. The tutorials on this site are amazing and I wouldn't have any questions if I were trying to fully debrand my phone. I'm only a little confused because I want to buck the trend and keep the phone somewhat Cingularized, but also take it back to its roots a little.

Thanks,
b

Hey you don't forget to get the Cingular custom pack.

Why not you debrand it because you have Cingular firmware as a backup?

Well, I got the idea per this thread on HoFo:

http://www.howardfor...d.php?t=1107585

The idea is to keep some things like the VM notifier, etc. and not have to mess with all the messaging settings, internet settings, etc. Now if you think that I'm wasting my time wanting that stuff, please feel free to offer some explanation. I'm open to considering a full debrand.

I'm just following some of the tutorials but wanting to mix-n-match with the methods to make it simpler. :-) Sometimes I like to leave things looking stock, but modify what's under the hood so to speak.

Thanks,
b

I too have a Cingular W810i Red 49. I chose to debrand, because it is already out of warranty, so it doesn't matter anyways. but before I did that, I flashed the Main (Generic_HN) & applied the Unlock VKP and then I kept getting Menu.ML errors and had to Flash the FS too. I don't think that you will be able to unlock using anything but the Generic_HN.

On the other hand, you should be able to add Flash menus, VKPs, and some other things without having to flash anything, using XS++ 3.1

The good news is that I don't need to unlock the phone, it's already unlocked courtesy of AT&T. When I mentioned to "unlock" hidden features, I should've used the term "re-enable" hidden features, such as the activity menu.

So what you're saying is that with XS++ 3.1, I can just use (FSX???) it to enable things like flash menus on the phone without flashing a MAIN or an FS? I would find that most preferable. Could you please point me to the best source to detail this, or give me a quick explanation here?

Thanks,
b

You're from Florida? My friends live in there (In Kissimmee, FL).

spoogenet
Did they unlock it by giving you the code?

If it patch unlock to MAIN, just flash the FS.
The flash menu were disable by branded custom pack.

@ Spoogenet
Cool, I was kind of scanning and didn't read that part. LOL
But yes, you will be able to add flash menus using XS++ FSX. I'd recommend Wally_Dog's Guide.

Yeah, WallyDog's guide is very good. I just want to make sure I don't do anything unnecessary.

So I'm interpreting your response as telling me I can do this:

1. Leave the MAIN on the phone
2. Leave the FS on the phone
3. Flash customizations using FSX, such as Customize.xml, etc.

Please confirm/deny.

Thanks,
b

Yeah, just use FSX to upload your customizations (Flash menus, Customize.xml, Menu.ml, etc) and then you can use SETool Lite to apply VKPs (one at a time)

Do I need VKP's?

VKPs are also known as patches, they allow you to change certain things, such as the Battery meter color or make the Photo Light flash while the phone is ringing.

You don't need them, but they are nice to have, just like flashmenus.

I see, thanks.

My understanding is that for the changes I want, I just use XS++'s FSX mode to upload something like a new Customize.xml file to enable flash menus, etc.?

Thanks a lot for all the help.

I just deleted a file named DisableFlashDesktop and uploaded the Flashmenus.
