1- What exactly is stored on the GDFS? I am a bit confused from reading different tutorials as to the extent of the information it holds.
I understand it is all the important data that the phone needs to function but does it act as the internal memory where all of the user data such as texts, photos etc are kept?
2) I am having a problem trying to back the GDFS up - I have currently had XS++ running for about half an hour now but it seems stuck at Activating GDFS...

Is it usual for it to take that long to activate it or could this mean that the GDFS is corrupted? I am using a DCU-60 cable, could that be the problem - is it only possible with a service cable? I previously tried using SE Tool lite to make a backup but it said it is not possible using this type of cable.
The phone is currently in a 'dead' state after a bad update from Sony Ericsson's update service - it is out of warranty and most likely I have lost all of my personal user data so I don't have anything to lose as such but it is the GDFS that is confusing me.
If it is personal for each individual handset what happens if I can't back it up?... can I get a 'clean' GDFS from one of the firmware sites linked via the firmware thread? There are two available for my handset model but I am concerned to use them after some of the previous advice on this thread.
Some clarification on this would be extremely helpful. Thanks
Edit: Phone is a Z520i - CID 36
When connecting to XS++ it says - 13:32:48| Warning: IMEI name does not match GDFS name (IMEI:Z520 GDFS:n/a)
13:32:48| ...using IMEI name
13:32:48|
is this part of the problem?
