Hi can I ask a question about the GDFS and backing it up?

1- What exactly is stored on the GDFS? I am a bit confused from reading different tutorials as to the extent of the information it holds.
I understand it is all the important data that the phone needs to function but does it act as the internal memory where all of the user data such as texts, photos etc are kept?

2) I am having a problem trying to back the GDFS up - I have currently had XS++ running for about half an hour now but it seems stuck at Activating GDFS...

Is it usual for it to take that long to activate it or could this mean that the GDFS is corrupted? I am using a DCU-60 cable, could that be the problem - is it only possible with a service cable? I previously tried using SE Tool lite to make a backup but it said it is not possible using this type of cable.

The phone is currently in a 'dead' state after a bad update from Sony Ericsson's update service - it is out of warranty and most likely I have lost all of my personal user data so I don't have anything to lose as such but it is the GDFS that is confusing me.

If it is personal for each individual handset what happens if I can't back it up?... can I get a 'clean' GDFS from one of the firmware sites linked via the firmware thread? There are two available for my handset model but I am concerned to use them after some of the previous advice on this thread.

Some clarification on this would be extremely helpful. Thanks

Edit: Phone is a Z520i - CID 36

When connecting to XS++ it says - 13:32:48| Warning: IMEI name does not match GDFS name (IMEI:Z520 GDFS:n/a)
13:32:48| ...using IMEI name
13:32:48|

is this part of the problem?

Fsx step
I guess this is the step i don't understand. I'm trying to add flash menus and new walkman skins. Xs++ does not have my phone model(w580i) therefor i created a own custompack folder in xs++ and clicked on flash. Everything worked fine. My directories where right everything went to the right place phone works great. Now when i want to upload new themes and skins i don't think i need to reflash everything again or maybe i do? Because everytime i try the fsx option start fsx nothing really happen it's like it never uploads the new themes or skins that i put in the diretory folders. I'm pretty sure it has to do with this files_to_upload folder that i should create(i also did try this option and still no upload of themes) so now my xs++ directory looks like this own_custpack/files_to_upload/tpa/below tpa 3 subfolders preset, system and user and within these folder is where i put all my new themes skins etc....
They just never seem to get uploaded with fsx. Maybe I'm just not getting it but i seem to be making this harder then i believe it should be. Is FSX not just a uploader that rewrites your files? Should it not pick up the new stuff?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thx rob1max

Step 2.
Select the firmwares (make sure you extract them first) by clicking the "..." buttons or simply dragging the file from the explorer to the box (don't get mixed up with FS and MAIN).
Click "Flash" and wait (this takes a while, 6-7 minutes is normal).

where do i find theese files fs and main????

Hi,

Thanks for the great software.
I screwed up my phone before I found this software to help recover my phone.

However, under Customize File System, I can't find k810i model and my region too not available.
The original region of my phone was set to CDA102779/63 R1A

Thanks for helping.

If a flash goes bad, two things need to be done. 1. You need to flash the firmware for the model you had before (when you did the GDFS backup), and 2. You need to restore GDFS.
meaning the main, fs, and custompack first before applying the gdfs backup i need some clarifiction on this thanks any suggestions

I'm attempting to convert my brown w960 to a red one, so I can update to the latest official firmware. Is it possible to do this? I haven't found a file specifically for the w960, and XS++ won't let me back up my GDFS (because it's a brown smartphone), so I'm very wary about using the wrong file.

If I flash using:
W880_R1KG001_MAIN_GENERIC_RED52.mbn and
W880_R1KG001_FS_APAC_RED52.fbn

and then choose XS++ provided customization file:
Custpack: Generic_Philippines (CDA102719/68)

will my phone be ok even though the custompack isnt labeled APAC? I read somewhere (this thread or another) that the custompack has to match the FS... I know the languages match, but does the labeling/naming (APAC/Philippines) have to match too? I'm confused about the CDA. Does the CDA of the custpack have to be the same as that of firmware R1KG001?

Thanks anyone and everyone that can help =)

Step by step instructions for flashing a phone using only XS++

Guide V1.3

Foreword
On behalf of TeamXS++ I would like to thank you for supporting free development by using our software.
This is the most updated version of the official XS++ user guide. Compiled by Rekoil on October 1st 2007 and updated by Rekoil on October 22nd 2007.

Table of contents

5) Uploading files via FSX *optional*

i) Terms of agreement
By following this guide you recognize that SE-NSE or the XS++ Team take no responsibility for any damage caused to your handset while doing so, having said that, it is very unlikely that you will.
If you do not agree to these terms leave this page now.

ii) DownloadsPlease download all of these files before proceeding.

iii) Changelog
V1.0 - October 1st 2007
  • Initial release
V1.1 - October 5th 2007
  • Added links for CDA and language information
  • Added Foreword and Changelog sections
  • Updated CID-change information
V1.2 - October 17th 2007
  • Reorganized a little. GDFS restore is now clearly shown as an optional step
  • Unless your customizing with FSX, it is also an optional step
V1.3 - October 22nd 2007
  • Added note about customization
1) Converting to CID52 (if required)
If XS++ detects a DB2020 CID49 or CID51 phone, it will automatically ask if the user wants to upgrade. I can not grab any screenshots of this as my phone is already CID52. (if someone would do that for me though it would be much appreciated :)

2) Backing up GDFS
Backing up the GDFS isn't something which necessarily has to be done when flashing firmware, but it is a very good way to ensure you don't damage your phone beyond repair.

Step 1.
Take battery out of phone and put back in (do not turn phone on). Open XS++ and click Connect. Hold down the "C" button on the phones keypad and connect the USB cable. If this is the first time you flash your phone you will need to install the Flash drivers I posted further up.
Posted Image

Step 2.
Click on the GDFS tab as shown in the picture.
Posted Image

Step 3.
Click "Backup GDFS" and wait (shouldn't take more than about half a minute).
Posted Image

Step 4.
Done :)

3) Flashing the firmware
Step 1.
Take battery out of phone and put back in (do not turn phone on). Open XS++ and click Connect. Hold down the "C" button on the phones keypad and connect the USB cable.
Posted Image

Step 2.
Select the firmwares (make sure you extract them first) by clicking the "..." buttons or simply dragging the file from the explorer to the box (don't get mixed up with FS and MAIN).
Click "Flash" and wait (this takes a while, 6-7 minutes is normal).

Step 3.
Flashing is done, you can breathe now :)

4) Customizing your phone
Compulsory if flashing FS
Step 1.
Take battery out of phone and put back in (do not turn phone on). Open XS++ and click Connect. Hold down the "C" button on the phones keypad and connect the USB cable.
Posted Image

Step 2.
Tick “Customize File System”, select model and region/CDA, click flash.
Click here for help picking the right region.
Click here for help picking the right CDA.
Posted Image

Step 3.
Done.
Posted Image

5) Uploading files via FSX *optional*
FSX can be used as a way of customizing your handset just like step 4. This would be done if a user had a custpack they wanted to use which wasn't in XS++ yet.
Step 1.
Browse to the directory where you have XS++ installed and create a folder named files_to_upload (if it doesn’t already exist). In here extract all the files as they would go on the phone. E.g. a flash menu swf would go in C:\XS++\files_to_upload\tpa\preset\system\desktop\flash\name_of_flash_file.swf

Step 2.
Take battery out of phone and put back in (do not turn phone on). Open XS++ and click Connect. Hold down the "C" button on the phones keypad and connect the USB cable.
Posted Image

Step 3.
Click on the FSX tab as shown in the picture.
Posted Image

Step 4.
Click "Start FSX" and wait.
Posted Image

Step 5.
Done. Files have now been uploaded.

*) Recovering from a bad flash
*WARNING* flashing a GDFS that did not originally come from that exact handset may have severe consequences. By exact handset I mean your handset, not your friends unlocked handset, YOUR HANDSET!
Number of users that have not listened to this and ended up with a broken handset: 4

If a flash goes bad, two things need to be done. 1. You need to flash the firmware for the model you had before (when you did the GDFS backup), and 2. You need to restore GDFS.

For flashing follow from step 3 above. Do the GDFS restore after flashing and customizing the handset.

Step 3.
Select the backup you wish to restore. Click “Write GDFS”.
Posted Image

Step 4.
Done :)

is it ok to back up my w810i's gdfs using only xs++, or should i also have to back up my gdfs with setool2 lite?
does the xs++ recognize the back up gdfs of setool2 lite and vise versa.

Cheers,
I just tried to connect XS++ and my P990 and it works perfect. (Original T-mobil sw unbranded to GW1).
Is there a way to unlock the P990i using XS++ and with the originally equipped DCU-60? Or what kind of operations can be done with the combination of XS++ and P990?

Thanks for any feedback.
