To find out your firmware. connect your phone with xs++ first or from the standby screen press "right", "STAR","left", "left","STAR","left", "STAR"
None of the firmware from the SE-king web site matched exactly, so I just picked the ones that were close to what was needed (English, USA, etc.)
First, I had no idea what i was doing, or getting into.
Here's the steps i took to debrand the 580i with some hindsight revision. I know there is improvement beyond what is listed here.
Befor you start!
1. Get all the files and tools mentioned above and load them on an old machine with WIN2K (XP would work)
2. Take the battery cover off your phone ( it will be coming in and out a lot)
3. Get a soda, and be prepared to experience some level of dispair as you go along.
My steps (Having no clue remember)
Step 0. Practiced connecting to the phone with XS++ and SE King. Found out that if you clicked any of the buttons in XS++ to switch tabs ( FSW, SETUP, etc) the program would lock up. I think this is a problem with the USB flash driver i was using. have yet to try a different one.
Step 1. Used SE-king 3.x to flash (add ) the firmware file to the phone ( .sw and .fs).
The process took a long time. SE-king displayed the address blocks it was writing to as it was going. When it was finished I turned on the phone. It took a long time to turn on and when it finally came up it had a configuration error screen (Note: always have to remove the battery before it will turn on after the flash connection is used). I thought the phone was toast and I would have to crawl to ATT to get it reconfigured.
Step 2. In desperation i used XS++ to try and flash the same files to the phone. (remember to not click on the radio buttons or it locks up). I put the sw and fs files in the proper boxes and ignored the phone that xs++ had preselected (you cant change it anyway) and reflashed the phone. XS++ displayed the files as they were being uploaded to the phone and the process went very fast. I then restarted the phone ( battery out first).
Apparent success the ATT garbage at start-up was gone and the menu structure was the Sony-Ericsson. After a few moments it found my network and I could make phone calls. Furthermore, it still had the same applications minus a few att web things( still had internet access, but you have to actually want to go to it vs ATT main button accidental access), some games and more ring tones. I found that some applications ( radio, other) were unavailable after the reflash.
Step 3. To correct the radio problem( and other application no-access problems) I reconnected with SE-King and after some trials used the "UNLOCK 2" command to unlock the phone. In the network box you need to enter a user and password. It did not matter what they were, but the PW has to be 8 characters long).
After restarting the phone ( battery) the radio and other applications worked fine.
After getting the phone at noon spending all evening playing with it, I consider it debranded, but it is still locked to ATT. I'm happy i did it. One thing though is that the time does not appear to be automatically setting itself with ATT, so i entered it manually.
