I successfully unlocked my w610i R1kg001 using generic firmware and a vkp patch for that firmware version, but it has some bugs so I'd like to upgrade to r8ba024 in hope that this upgrade will fix them.

Will I have to find an unlocking vkp patch for r8ba024, or I can just upgrade it without having to worry about it?

If I understand correctly a firmware upgrade won't unlock a locked phone, so that setting should be firmware independent, but I'm not sure if the patch modifies the setting, or just somehow tampers with the ability of the firmware to successfully read that setting.

Can anyone please clarify it? Thanks !!

Flashing will eventually undo .vkp patches.
Try to use Simox lockpatch generator for the unlocking network with r8ba024 main.
