Hello,
After a computer to phone file transfer the phone did not restart fully. It went to the desktop picture, the signal bars, and battery icon. That was it. No time and date, no access to any other files. It was like everything but those 3 things were gone completely. When the phone tried to start the phone vibrated normally then went to a white screen, beeped once then the desktop as explained above. I tried all trouble shooting steps I could find and as Sony help told me to do as far as removing the battery and holding the C button, etc. I then proceeded to do an update. At first when I plugged the phone into the PC it read, "new hardware detected" and named it error. Strange. After a couple tries the update finally recognized the phone and the update went through ok. Except it didn't change anything at all. The phone still only loaded so far and stopped. I waited for 24 hours for it to reset with no luck. I left the battery out for a couple hours and tried everything again. I have done all these things several times. I have searched forum after forum and have become very fraustrated . I am disabled and live with a very high amount of pain and take mega dosages of pain meds daily so I get easialy confused and lost, brain blocked so to speak. I need my phone for my doctors etc. I do not have any money as I can't work and what money I do get goes for meds. This forum is as close as I have gotten to a solution but now I am lost and flustered. I'm not sure if this is the right place but here I am anyway. LOL! I would like to think the phone is salvagable since it is not a total white screen. Oh yea, My nephew did get the walkman to play a song earlier by pushing button after button. Not sure what he did and neither is he. LOL! Please if there is any clear and precise help as to where the files I need are and how to get them back into the phone and get it working I would be very gratefull for the help! Alright, I am NOT SURE, but I THINK that your firmware is corrupt. Although, when you updated with Sony Ericsson Update Service, did it update, or just said that you had the latest firmware ?

Thank you for your reply. I am at my wits end over this. I have to have it working in 2 weeks or I'm sunk. When I do the update it says " Update is not needed. Latest software is already installed." then the choice to continue anyway or go back to start. I have been reading through the forums and I am having a hard time comprehending things. But I am thinking that the firmware is corrupt as you mentioned. Thank you again.

your main firmware is corrupted it happens when you just disconnect the phone from the pc without doing the remove hardware safely thing, since seus wont update your phone you need xs++3.1 from here

you also need a main firmware, flashing the main only is really easy

1. in xs++3.1 click the flash tab
2. put the main firmware in the main box
3. press flash

if you need help selecting the correct firmware, connect you phone to xs++ then disconnect it, then where xs++.exe you will see a file called xs++.log open it in notepad copy and paste the information and post it.

It took a few tries but finally put up the info.

no i don't think that will work as davinci use that type for their flashing program, i think its encrypetd

But, yeah make sure when you het the firmware it has 'MAIN' and 'AMERICA' in it

Ok. I don't have that file then. All I found were the dvt files. Can yoou point me in the right direction for it please? I have been up all night trying to figure this. I used to be pretty bright but after several years on heavy meds I seem to have lost a bit. Very fraustrating. I used to be a computer whiz. If so i think you could use any R7CA017 main firmware. (if some one could confirm this it would be great as i am not sure)

W600_R7CA017_FS_CINGULAR_RED49 is at top sony but I don't have 2 months to wait. Someone must have this file. Please? I do photo restorations or original digital art I could trade for it, anything. I am desperate.

Ok, I found this, W600_R7CA017_FS_Extracted.rar. it seems to have every file I had in my phone in the first place. Images, ringtones, all folders and items. everything it seems. How do I get it in the phone? I also found several of the R7CA017 FS AMERICA files in fbn and mbn formats. Any ideas?

the main firmware should be in .mbn format, as i said before you flash it like this
1. in xs++3.1 click the flash tab
2. put the main firmware in the main box
3. press flash

It must be a MAIN firmware, what you got is an extraced FS.

My mistake. The mbn files are main nam2 files. the FS america2 files are fbn. The extracted set just says FS. will the NAM2 files work? I told you I am an idiot. they are all R7CA017 red 49.

you need a main firmware, NAM2 is no good i don't even know what nam2 is, you need
W600_R7CA017_MAIN_GENERIC_EE_RED49 or W600_R7CA017_MAIN_ROGERS-CINGULAR-LAM_1_RED49
both are avaible from www.topsony.com

you have to wait 2 months and make a bunch of posts at top sony to get them.so I guess I'm out of luck unless you know a way to get the extracted files installed. Thank you.
It seems I have no choice but to try the nam files and/or the .fbn files and see what happens. If those don't work I'll try to add the extracted files into the phone and see what happens.

I guess www.iprotebe.cz will be up in some time, you most probably will find it there... I'll post it here if I can find it..

EDIT II: I have reason to believe NAM might be North America. I'd say try flashing with these files first. Then do tell us your results. I'd recommend using Setool2 Lite v1.08 (or 1.10).
I have video tutorials for it if you wnat'em, they're pretty small in size (~400Kb)

you only really need to flash the main, give the nam2 firmware a try you need the .mbn file thats the main.

I flashed tha nam pack and it flashed perfectly. Phone still nothing in the phone except the signal bars , desktop, and battery icon. now where do I go? What is the custon pack? And I really appreciate your help!

I am trying to find the file system with XS+++ by using the FSX function but it has been stuck on file system activation for awhile now.

I just read that the 550 is the same as the 600. Does flashing, like I just did, to 550 firmware change things and would there be a chance of it working? There seems to be no problems getting files and such for the 550. Thanks!

I finally hit shutdown and it is now stuck on FS Activation Startup. LOL! I'm losing this battle....


Doesn't seem to matter what i try it, (XS++) won't go past File System Activation. I tried to install the custom pack and the same results. XS++ just hangs. Any ideas??

Ok, I reflashed with one of the america 2 .fbn files and it worked. Well almost. It now goes to a cingular start up screen then gives the choice to start phone or music. when you choose phone it gives an error. It is a totally different start up screen then I had before but somethings better then nothing. But, now it gives the configuration error, please contact your operator warning. I tried to install the custom pack again and XS++ still hangs at filesystem activation. Now what? Or does it take along to for this step to complete?

I tried 2 different packs. Is it possible neither is the right one? I made sure to match the settings with the pack I was using.

I figure I'm typing to myself at this point but oh well. LOL! I realized what the difference between main and FS files were. I flashed the main mbn and the fs fbn at the same time and they both flashed perfectly. Then without turning the phone on I removed, then replaced the battery then tried installing a custom pack. Again XS++ is stuck at filesystem activation. There has to be something I can do.

Hey don't be disheartend because no one replies for a few hours. :-) okay, xs isn't working for you. i can think of FAR manager and setool that you could use to upload the files,but unfortunaty i have no idea how to work them. I'm not really dis-hearted as I am fraustrated. It wouldn't be so bad if the phone wasn't needed so I don't lose medicaid coming up soon. I'm trying to work around this but paper work and the government are far more fraustrating then this phone. LOL! Thank you for your reply and I know we will fix it. Sorry mate just saw your posts, our timezones are exactly the opposite.
Anyway as I said in my post#19 you should use SETool2 Lite and not XS++. Xs++ has a problem, it cannot upload files to the W550/600 Filesystem.
And whatever you do, dont flash the W550's FW on, its a Tri Band phone without EDGE. I doubt it will work in the US.

Anyways, you're doing great. A configuration error means youre just one step away from making your phone work again.
Now follow these instructions carefully and everything will work out.

1.Download SETool2 Lite v1.08(or 1.10).

2.Download the custpack. I recon the one I posted before will work. If you have a more definitive one you could use that

3.Make sure the custom pack is a .zip. It is to have the following folder structure.
tpa/preset/custom/
All the files are in the folder called custom.
This entire folder structure is zipped (not .rar).
I'm quite sure the CUSTPACK will infact originally exist in such a configuration. I doubt you will have to make it.
But it is important that its a .zip archive.

EDIT: I just downloaded the Custpack I gave you. Its in this exact format and its a generic one. I guess you could use it or maybe use it as a reference!

4.Open SETOOL2 Lite. Choose your phone from the drop down menu.
The interface will have a MISC file section. Click on the button "...". Then choose your custompack. It must be a zip( I'm sorry for saying that a million times but its important )

5.Now thats done, click on FLASH. Remember to click on the buttons carefully. Its a very densely populated area in terms of buttons, dont click on anything else
Remove SIM, re-insert battery. Connect phone holding 'c' on the phone. When it says so, disconnect, remove and re-insert battery and then click on READY and re-connect phone while holding 'c'

6.It will upload the custpack and youre ready to go!!

I'm attaching a video tutorial. Its for flashing the MAIN, FS and CUST. You dont need main and FS. You just have to follow the thing he does in MISC part.
You're phone will be fixed for sure, and you should be proud. ( I was cause I saved some cash )

SIM Card? The little plastic card? I did that, followed step by step and setool went white screen and stopped. also a window with the phones basic files opened up like it would during a file transfer. I'm going to sytrta it over. When do i put the sim card back in?

no, the phone turned on and gave the usb connected warning over and over like it normaly does when doing a file transfer. setool just locked up. it's been almost 20 minutes and it has done nothing. wait, setool just disapeared is that normal?. Ok then, I clicked the safetly remove hardware button and it says "The Device "Generic volume" cannot be stopped right now. Try stoping the device again later" And like i said setool is gone. LOL! BTW, welcome to my life. 6 years of if it can go wrong it will. If you have read JOB from the bible you wil know me well. If I didn't have bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all. LOL! Well I guess disconect everything and try again. Yep, setool is no where to be found. And about the sin card. is that supposed to stay out or put right back in like the battery. abmadman didn't say. Oh yea, while attaching the phone setool did nothing but freeze. it didn't go into the recognization mode thing it's supposed to do. It did shoe the custom package as being there but that was all.

Ok, Step #1 with setool, turn on, click recognize then plug phone in and let it set up then go through the rest of the steps. My phone is now working. : Almost. Everything is totally different then it was originally. I suspect it is because I did not have the proper firmware to flash with. The only real problem I see is only part of the keypad is working. Certain numbers won't work and the same corresponding letters won't work. Any ideas about this? But most of my numbers were saved in contacts, everything else was erased though, games, music, etc. no problem though to re-load it all. And I can call out with a pre-set number and incoming calls work fine. Just need to get the whole key pad working. Let me know with any ideas. I am going to try to update it now and see what happens. Also someone donated the money to my pay pal so I can buy firmware from topsony if I need it. God Bless them. I am not sure if i am going to use it but my idea is this, if you guys need any firmware I can get it. It seems for the 2.92 dollars you get 50 megs a day for 5 days which is alot of firmware. If you give me a list I will get it if I decide to do this. Since I can't spend paypal money on meds i might as well. There is a harmonica holder I could get I've had my eye on too. LOL! Let me know. has the phone been dropped taken apart or anything, that might be why the keypad doesn't work other wise it's software related problem, what firmware did you use to flash with???? topsony has the correct firmware you need it might be worth trying some firmware off topsony to get the keypad working properly.

Keypad does not work? Hmmm.. Dont think thats a software problem,anyway what you could do is go to the service menu and do a keypad test. The directions correspond to the same directions pressed on the keypad. Left * right right * right * them in service tests,keypad.you can press keys and check if they work. i hope thats right,i'm on a long train ride back to college

I took the phone apart and everything seems to be in order. Doesn't look like there is much that can go wrong with the keypad. It's a sealed metal plate. The buttons all click ok and the wires seem to be fine as is the connection. I suppose I'm going to have to buy the other firmware just to make sure. Have a safe trip check back when you get in abmadman and thank you! And thank you number 1 and brookie353!

BTW, Where is the service menue? I'm not sure about how to do a test of the key pad. And I'll be darned if I can find it here in a search.

I have done parts 1 and 2, and now when my phone boots up it goes to the startup menu, and when I select start phone, it says "'configuration error. please contact your service provider or service center." But my REAL question is the part where I install the custompack, there are 8 files in that custom pack, do I install all of them?

Dont extract them!! Just do what is done in the video tutorial.
Place the zips in the MISC folder and press flash.

More importantly what phone do you have?? W550 or W600?? They're different.
Allphones and all zones require different cust packs to survvive!!

abmadman i have done everything in your posts. and yes i got my phone to actually work, the WSOD is gone and it even fixed the config error... but now i have a dilemma.. its not in english lol.. it works i even have all my phone numbers! but its not in english im sure it has to do with the custom pack that was given out earlier.. do you by any chance have an english custom pack? yes i know it says America2 on it but it didnt go english.. and the settings i chose to flash it was.. w550/w600 because my phone is the 600i.. is that the right choice? or should it be the 610? thanks!

LOL no english eh? are you absolutely sure? try going to settings-language cause even latin american custom packs have english along with the regional languages! i'll look for another custom pack for you. you could try searching 4shared or iprotebe.cz . the cda list at topsony.com will help you find out which languages are in the custom pack. it actually mentions english in america2 !

i talked to SE support and they wasnt much help .. dude told me to goto the site and DL a update service program

i did and tried runnin it a few times and its not helping.. im gonna go back and folllow all the instructions here

and see if i can get it workin if i could get some help that would be great
