CONVERT A 512 MB duo/produo/MMC CARD TO 640 MB
DO YOU GUYS WANT TO CONVERT A 512 MB duo/produo/MMC CARD TO 640 MB AT NO COST AT ALL.THEN READ ON...
I guess it works for duo/produo/mmc cards.
Your files in duo/produo/MMC is stored in multiple (disk) blocks.
So if you format using 16K block, the space used will be 16K eventhough your file is just 1K.

If you buy DUO/PRO-DUO, it is usually preformatted with 16K block. Therefore a lot of space is wasted as most installed program files are usually less than 2K.

You will need a card reader to do this:-
edit:u can also do it by connecting u r phone via usb

1. Connect card reader and copy all your files in the memory card to computer disk.
(Make sure you set the show all/hidden/os files to "on")
2. Do a format of the memory card using command line "format" and use the /A=size option.
Alternative, you can use the Disk Management in Adminstrative Tools to format.
Make sure you select FAT16. For 256MB memory card, smallest block you can use is 4K, 128MB is 2K, 64Mb is 1K and 32MB is 512B.

(Note: You cannot use the phone "format ext.mem" to do this as the format just clear the allocation table and does not change the block size)

3. Copy back all files to memory card.

Now you will find that you will have more space.
I have installed many software to to my 256MB memory card and it is nearly full. After doing above, I got an "extra" 32MB.

For those who have problem with command line format::

Just use the Disk Managament to format

1. Goto Start->control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer management->Disk management
2. Select your memory card/usb drive. Right-click and select "Format"
3. Select "FAT". Choose Allocation size. For 256Mb MMC select 4K, 128Mb MMC select 2K, 64Mb MMC select 1K and 32Mb MMC select 512B

Some people say it does not work on mmc cards!! confused.gif

Plz give me a reply to boost me smile.gif

Nice guide does this work with a 1GB stick to? If so; what allocation size ?
Tanmoy89
@highlaj

This seems to be a good idea! But it does work with the phone normally? I mean it will not corrupt!

@Tanmoy89
Does it work with 1gb stick if i use allocation size 16kb ?
Tanmoy89
@miroalex
yes, it works with 1gb with allocation size 16kb if it does not work try to format it with 8kb if formatting fails just reformat the card normally (By choosing default allocation size)
NOTE:- Formatting with different allocation sizes will not damage your memory card smile.gif

The trick doesn't change the capacity of the card, so it seems that nothing has changed. But try to copy your files to the card. You will have more free memory on the card then before formating. The difference will be greater if you have many small files on your card. I got extra 4MB only (I have 1GB card), because the most of my files are MP3's and videos. So if you have many big files, don't format your card. It is not worth.

check this thread why the preformated memory cards does not show full capacity

You should use FAT

@Tanmoy89
I use allocation size 16K for 1GB stick but nothing is changed it remains 957mb also i use 8K allocation size but failed ! I think this trick doesn't work on 1GB or maybe 2GB sticks!
Tanmoy89
sorry miroalex i can't help u....i have never tested this trick on a 1gb/2gb card... sad.gif

@miroalex
increase the file allocation size to 32k and see if it works...WARNING: By doing this small files such as 1kb files will use 32kb of space in u r memory card

yes, i've been through it...

but, why cant i increase the size from 60MB... you can increase a 512 to 640, then why not with 64mb!!! :-(

Hey please help me. i did 16k to 512 mspd end now when i inserte my car it not always works. When i make it work in the file folder mp3's work fine but when i try to play them in player i get white screen. When i go to tracks and select one it's the same. i tryed to flash phone Fs but it's the same. What to do ?

Phone is w800
::vicky::
wtf close this thread not works on 512 mb
Majik
Inproof, Try formatting the card again with the 'Default' block size in Disk Management, should make it work.

Oh and I tried this trick on my 64 MB MSPD because I desperately need more space, but I didn't get any more space.
chintu
well this trick works on my friends 1gb nokia mmc card he got an extra 56mb but it does work on my 1gb mspd sad.gif plz help
Haydar77
Thansk Great ... i will try it
M
dam if only it were to work on 2gigs..lol
UnUnOctium
I'd also advise against this if you store your music on your memory card, since solid state memory (flash especially) is known to be slow, so the smaller the blocks, the more accesses the phone needs to do to play an mp3 file (for example).

i'd suggest you dont use this as many people are claiming it doesnt work, i didnt try it on my 2gb mspd because people already say it doesnt work. I tried it on my 512mb mspd and it didnt , i also noticed when playing mp3 files, the tracks didnt play as smooth as b4 on my 512mb. so stay clear 4rm this , it doesnt work and it muffs up the memory card, ITS USELESS!!!!

This trick works to give you more space IF you have a lot of small files. The thread title is misleading. It does not convert or increase your memory size. It makes it so that it uses LESS space to store data since the smallest size taken up when you store anything is 32KB be default. So storing a 1K text file on the memory card eats up 32KB no matter what. Using smaller cluster size means it will use up less space. But if you store a 1MB MP3 file, it might only save you 8KB. Storing 100 of those 1MB MP3 files saves you a qhopping 0.8MB of space... Less than 1%. But if you store 100 1K text files, you will see a HUGE difference in using 8K cluster size instead of 32K. The 8K cluster size would use 800K to store the files, which is less than 1MB while the 32K clusters would use 3.2MB to store the same data. So in effect to store 100K of text files <1K text files, 100 of them> takes 4 times as much memory one way as the other, although in both cases it still takes up a lot more memory than the real file size.

And there should not be any noticable difference in anything due to different cluster sizes IF done propery and accurately. Any speed difference you notice is probebally due to imagination.

oh blink.gif , so this does not actually increase memory , the thread name should be changed smile.gif
my memory card didnt go slower its just mp3's dont play as smooth as b4 (after every 1-2 minutes there is a 1 sec pause in each track - never happend b4 i did this )
but this doesnt really bother me, i never use my 512 smile.gif

USELESS THREAD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fireleaf
OMG! This is great! Will it work on a 1GB Mem Card?
alicia
i guess u should read more before askin
its not gonna work
it could make ur memory card more slow to read
lawrencep93
Can you do it with a m2 1gb in a k850i??
Sofacykel
I don't think you guys get it eh? -.-

If your allocation size is set to, lets say 32kb, then EVERY FILE under 32kb on your card will be exact 32kb.
If you have a file with the filesize of 40kb, it will be 64kb on your memorycard.

32-64-96-128, etc etc.

So if you set your allocation size to 4kb instead of the 32 mentioned above, then your 40kb file will fill up 10 of those 4kb blocks and be exactly 40kb in size on your card.
The lower the allocation size, the less lost memory you will get.

Hope I'm right, and hope this helps somebody understand.

FIRST POST BTW!!! laugh.gif

Hey guys my 1 GB is fake as ppls said in this forum.I brought a 1 GB for my SE but when i store more then 512 it won't work on my fone.After store 512 MB when i copy new files like videos or songs it cannot be able to play on my fone.Can i get my 1 GB ms back plssssssssss help me!

So then what will my 1gb ms size become when i format it in that way??
Naidu
Actually this one really works on 1GB M2,,, but IT DOES NOT INCREASE the capacity
instead it reduces additional taken space on the memory.

If you try formatting 1GB M2 on K800,,, you will se somewhat 480kb used space when
it is read in the My Computer > Disk Properties. Also after formatting I added files
which are exactly 61.3MB. my 1GB M2 (949 MB) has then now 884MB instead of 888MB
because its not reformatted at allocated 16kb,,, so 4mb free space was wasted.

But then I formatted it again,,, by using the method here,,, it has now 888MB.
it really useful,,, but again it does not increase memory capacity,,, it just only
save a wasted free space....

Sorry for my english if its not clearly explaind sad.gif

Have you ever burnt a "4,7" Gb DVD? Well, you actualy have only ~ 4,4 Gb to store in total. Why? It's a trick used by manufacters to attract buyers X( 4,7 Gb comes from the ~ 4.700.000.000 bytes which DON'T mean 4,7 Gb because the multiplyer isn't 1000, it's 2 raised to the 10th power=1024 and at such big numbers it does make a differance.

So, 60 Mb = 64.424.509.440 bytes which is 'translated' by the retailer as "64 Mb". So you have less than advertised. Same goes for any numbers displayed on any storage device. Now you know...
