Se W705 And Wifi - Is There A Dhcp Option? Options

I have an SE W705 on contract from Orange (UK). I have tried to set up WiFi Internet access via my domestic wireless router. I find I can only do this successfully if I hardcode IP addresses for the phone itself, the router gateway and a DNS server.

I looked in vain for a phone option to accept these addresses from the router (which has DHCP switched on).
Should there be one? Does the phone look to see if (e.g.) I have specified an IP address for the phone and, if one is not present, assume I wanted an automatically assigned address?
