uiq

UIQ's CEO Johan Sandberg told Reuters in a recent interview that the company has filed for bankruptcy. UIQ was jointly owned by Sony Ericsson and Motorola, and supplied a version of Symbian to some mobile handsets. UIQ's bankruptcy comes partly as a result of Nokia's purchase of Symbian, formed the Symbian Foundation and said it would begin producing a royalty-free Symbian platform. CEO Johan Sandber said the owners will not provide any more financial support. He also added that there were no opportunities to create a new line of business in the current financial climate.

Sony Ericsson had said in November that it would continue to fund UIQ while it considered the options for the future of the firm. However, it seems that the handset maker has decided its pointless to continue funding UIQ. UIQ still had 200 employees as of last month.

Yeah, the lags can get on your nerves sometimes...
I had three UIQ phones (M600/P1/G900) and none of them disappointed me.

The laggy performance was basically due to SE sticking to slower processors. UIQ is in no way entirely responsible for its demise.

I'm upset though. UIQ over all was excellent. The UI was great, and it all clipped together. I just don't see anything attractive ATM, except the Palm Pre with WebOS, it's interesting. Symbian Foundation is just going to be S40 + S60 with elements taken from UIQ3. Never really like S40 or S60 D: iPhone is just nothing special, although being MacOSX, it's stable and works like a tank. I just don't like it's basic features, and don't really see anything revolutionary about it either. No Keyboard ohmy.gif Windows Mobile just never cut it, it's slow and buggy, although has a big 3rd Party Development. Android, nothing special, in it's first steps stage, open source is great but that's about it. I'm gonna wait for WebOS and see what goes then. Although the idea of UIQ3 becoming open source would be great.
