Firstly let me say that I am an extreme Noob so your patience (and assistance) is greatly appreciated.
Please don't get exasperated by my first question. What is the difference between flashing and debranding?
I previously debranded my w580i CID52 using SEtool and a youtube video and it was a "piece of cake".
My phone had to go back for warantee and was returned as CID53. Now things do not seem so simple. I went through diezil's excellent tutorial on JDflasher (http://forums.se-nse.net/index.php?showtopic=23228) however I seem to be an idiot since in the end when I turned the phone back on nothing had changed.
Is there a simple way of doing this for a simple person like me?
Please help since I have been spoiled by having the phone previously debranded and really want to go this route again.
Thanks

Sorry to bump but I thought that when I posted on the Newbie forum people would be more helpful.
I have searched and tried flashing per my original post so it's not like I am being ignorant about things.
I really would appreciate someones input here.
Thanks.

There sure is a simple way, but not for free. since you have a CID53 phone now :-/

All you have to do is update JD flasher to test6

Or if you want patches, pay to have your CID downgraded back down to CID52

OK, I realise that I can pay money but that spoils the fun and challenge.
Upon reflection I think that maybe I flashed the phone with the wrong files when I used Diezil's tutorial since that was actually for a W810. I am not sure why my phone still works if this is the case?
Can you tell me what files I will need for my phone?
Thanks

I found another thread re. flashing a w5801 CID53 in which cchaos advised the user to follow this tutorial
Well, you couldnt of looked hard enough for JD [url="http://forums.se-nse.net/index.php?showtopic=23228"]
Not wanting to get sh*t for not looking hard enough I followed the suggested tutorial and flased the following
Halmer Certificate:
http://www.4shared.com/file/27398791/3bc21...e_-_Halmer.html
(I suppose that this is the "file I flashed" even though it is referred to as a certificate.)
The tutorial got a little confusing when it referrred to breakin loader's but I followed it through as best as possible.
Hence the situation I am in now.
Please help since statements like "All you have to do is update JD flasher to test6" seem somewhat cryptic to me since I do not know the "lingo" and I do not want to brick my phone. I do know what that means wink.gif

Well you didn't flash anything there, you just uploaded a new cert to your phone. Flashing is the act of actually reinstalling the phone's MAIN and/or FS firmware, usually to debrand it, i.e remove all Rogers related icons and links etc to make it generic.
Since your phone is CID 53, you might want to pay to have it downgraded to CID 52 to enable patching, or you can download the latest JD Flasher, and flash CID 53 firmware, but that won't unlock your phone if it's locked, just remove the Rogers stuff.
CID 53s can't be patched freely. smile.gif

Well, I see that you managed to find the search button after all lol.gif

Anyway, I didnt mean there, I actuallly meant here where it has links and upgrades for jd flasher, which are dead easy to install: all you have to do is delete the JD flasher folder where ever you installed FAR manager, and extract the updated JD flasher to the plugin folder of FAR manager

Oh, you might wanna download the add on and copy that to the right directories as well as the db2020 scripts for CID52 patching. At the moment though there is no patching for CID53

Or, like I said:

Yes, I searched but there is a lot of info to search through and all relates to flashing where I am accustomed to the term "debranding". Hence my original question. (I'm still not 100% sure on that one)

but that won't unlock your phone if it's locked, just remove the Rogers stuff
I don't want to unlock the phone only debrand it.

To get this clear in my own mind...
1)Flashing = debranding
This process allows you to replace the phones firware which has been customized by the carrier with generic firmware. This allows you to get regain some of the phones original functionality and get rid of the carried installed/modified applications.

2) Phones with CID's of less than 53 can be flashed/debranded with a program like SEtool however with CID53 devices JDFlaser+FAR manager would be required.

3) Unlocking (enabling the use of the phone with SIM cards other than your carrier's) and patching seem to be the same thing.

4) Phones with CID 53 cannot currently be unlocked/patched for free

Am I catching on? Is there hope for me yet?

Being on your end I might tend to be getting a little inpatient at these seemingly "stupid" questions. Please remember that if you know more about a topic than someone else then that is a great thing but that it does not make the person stupid.
For all you know I might be a nuclear physicist! (I'm not by the way) laugh.gif

Correct, if you use a genric main. Use a file system (FS) region that matches the languages you want inside the phone. Be sure to use the same custom pack as the region stated in your FS

Yes, its the test6 version you want with the add ons

3) Unlocking (enabling the use of the phone with SIM cards other than your carrier's) and patching seem to be the same thing.

Unlocking means that: you can use any sim card with the phone. This is normally done by patch nowadays, but theres also other patches that can enable evles (which can do thinks like changer the operator logo etc) but you need to have CID52 to be able to patch (see below)

Correct, unless they are downgraded back down to CID52, which you have to pay for. Thinking about it, I seem to recall something about a QA (quick access) patch that allows you to patch a CID53 (but again this has to be paid for) but Im not 100% sure on that one. The one I am 100% sure on is downgrading it back down to CID52

I think youre catching on, judging by the questions you asked (Ive posted like this to (hopefully) save you some confusion)

As for the "stupid questions", I dont mind them too much as long as Im not typing like a parrot (like I was at one time:lol:)
