![]() UIQ's entire 270 staff have been put on notice of dismissal. With both Sony Ericsson and Motorola no longer using UIQ in their products the company's future is dubious. Sony Ericsson has agreed to fund the company on a monthly basis to allow UIQ to explore its options, in other words until someone buys the company or the staff can be found other jobs. The staff themselves are a valuable asset given their experience. All About Symbian reports that both Sony Ericsson and Motorola has dropped a number of UIQ handsets planned for launch. It doesn't necessarily mean anything.
But, reading between the lines, UIQ is dead, so Obviously, they already have a WinMo handset on the market but since no OS is perfect and since the Xperia white-paper specifically states that the handsets are not limited to being just WinMo-based, it would seem likely that |

I think Sony Ericsson will follow Motorola's move and adopt Android too.
That would be good to know which is best though, Symbian or Android? I hope that SE goes for the best... -------------------- iii ɥɔuǝɹɟ ʞɐǝds ı SE w810i r4db005 CID49 | eXcellent Digital Surround ViVa Acoustic driver | Ultra_Superdriver 6.7u2 Camera driver |

SE is going for Symbian Foundation You think? S60 is to slow, and S40 isn't much better in that stake.... prefer WinMo or Android devices from Symbian Foundation is to Nokiaized for my liking, at least with UIQ Symbian they had a variation (didn't like UIQ either though)... we may as all well get Nokia's from now on......... at least with android their would have been a nice solid 'Linux' based OS. for straight Symbian to work on a -------------------- |

I'd prefer Symbian over Android any day at the moment. For now Android lacks a variety of features, and seems limited in many ways - just like iPhoney.

Yeah, I'm with you Matt, I think that if
Not to mention, I think it's a really bad OS anyway. WinMo seems to offer a more customisable experience, which would allow As for Android, I haven't tried it but it seems to have the most potential of all of the OSs. Anyway, |

@ Step we really must stop agreeing
I have seen some of the devices Motorola are developing in the last two roadmaps with 'WinMo' and 'Android' and to me they seem a class above what 'Nokia' are punting for the next year (At this moment) Symbian has never made it with me, and to the same respect UIQ, which i was glad I would like to see more market share for Linux based OS's and WinMo than Symbian... (just because Nokia is a popular brand they think Symbian is all that) @ Mizzle the variety of features is only due to the symbian based Nokia devices (due to Nokia's market share) the times are changing there!.... it's Not likes Ericssons R380 did anything for symbian??? and the iPhone is just fine -------------------- |

Well, I saw the description of android on google, it seems pretty OK. It's open-source, and you can modd it how much you want.
It will certainly be a solution for SE to go with android. -------------------- |

S60 is a pretty good UI, as is WM, but I'm a little worried with the "clumsiness" of WM and and how its less "fingerfriendly" than the iphone's UI. And plus, with 6.5 coming out, what's going to happen to the X1's 6.1? free upgrade?

@Matt
Well, I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to have an application for each and every single standard feature on my phone. One for MMS, one for video capture, one for file management, etc. That's just stupid in my opinion, and it's one of the major flaws of iPhone and Android. To me it just makes a statement that neither Apple nor Google have put enough work and effort into creating something that's got it all. In terms of what I call standard features, my old T68i would kick the behind of both iPhone and G1 (or any other Android-based handset to come) together. -------------------- You can visit my website here, if you want. |

You got a point there. However, I think that all the platforms meet in the end because a large number of users find that 3rd party programs offer greater experiences compared to 'original integrated apps' and this is why it ends up being the same. Why would someone use an external movie player if the multimedia players are already alright (?) etc... So in a way, I think that Google allows users to implement whatever they want and like into their phones, and 'trash' things that they would not use. That might be why it can be interesting. -------------------- iii ɥɔuǝɹɟ ʞɐǝds ı SE w810i r4db005 CID49 | eXcellent Digital Surround ViVa Acoustic driver | Ultra_Superdriver 6.7u2 Camera driver |
