Sony Ericsson is going to change its old nomenclature of their entire product range. Some among you were surprised of the funky and weird namings of the latest Sony Ericsson products. This scheme will answer almost all of your questions regarding the new namings.

The future names won't carry the typical "i" in the end of the product name. So the R300 and the R306 are the first phones that follow this new nomenclature. It isn't really new, since we know the same nomenclature from the Japanese phones already. And here we go:

To get the whole story completed - a brief explanation of the upcoming series and their lower end parts:

• XPERIA vs. G-Series (G stands for: Generation Web)

The G-series is the lower end series compared to the XPERIA series. Both are determined as dedicated smart phone series.

• Cyber-shot - Series vs. Snapshot - Series (new S-series phones)

Cyber-shot has become a well known and well beloved series within the Sony Ericsson portfolio. It will get a new "sub-brand" called Snapshot containing new stylish phones in different form factors poorer equipped than the Cyber-shot models.

• Walkman - Series vs. Radio - Series (new R-series phones)

The smaller brother of the Walkman line will be the poorer equipped Radio line. It will be a nice extension regarding the music department of Sony Ericsson.

Some examples on existing phones:

C902 - High-End Candybar (Cyber-shot)
C702 - Mid-Range Candybar (Cyber-shot)
R306 - Low-End Clamshell (Radio-Series)

Successors will be indexed for example C912... C922... C932, and so on smile.gif
As you can see, there are a lot of varieties and combinations... so SE won't run out of new names that soon laugh.gif

That doesn't seem right.
Most models end 0 irregardless of their form factor - for example, the W980 and Z770 are both new models that don't conform to this supposed code.

Also, since when was the S-series supposed to stand for 'Snapshot'?
The S500 certainly wasn't marketed as being camera-oriented in any way.

These are "old" models, named after the old pattern. They even have the "i". All new series are named after the new scheme.

'Old' models that were unveiled at the same time as some of the 'new' models and after some of them (like the R306)?

Also, even these 'new' models still have the i/a/c suffixes as well.
The R300, R306, T270, T280, C702, C902 and G700 are all planned to have models using differing suffixes.

I don't like the new naming scheme. Why'd they have to make it so complicated....

I do like the fact that we can tell which phone is better just by looking at the model though. Like the W580i and W810i, some may think the W810i is better just because it has a higher model number, when in fact it's the other way around.

Xperia X1 doesn't fit.

X = unsure what this "series" is other than for the ultimate that can be acquired.
1 = low range ?? are you SERIOUS?! Even at teh end of the year I see only the iMate 9506 competing.

Form Factor is not defined unless the "0" in X1 (supposed to be X10) is invisible?

until an X2/3/etc debuts we'll not be sure how the Xperia fits into all of this. Also, if a UIQ version debuts in the Xperia lineup then it throws this out of wack.

Well, I like it. It's tidied up a bit, K series was a mix of Cybershots, cheap 3Gs (K610 and the pack), and random handsets. I don't miss the i too, most people I know thought that i is an improved version (like with Nokia 6230 and 6230i). As for phones like the W980i, I think they were planned earlier than the R306, thus the old nomenclature. And X, well... maybe eXperiment? After all the X1 is something new for SE, the form factor, the OS, and so on. I think there was some SE statement about not limiting the X series to WinMo, so well... I think it's quite fitting.

Whether the W980 was planned before or after the R306, it was released after it and could easily have had it's name switched to this new style.

Anyway, as I have mentioned already, the suffixes are still there.
A number of the 'new' models are being released in different versions with area-specific adjustments to the GSM bands supported and they still have the i, a and c suffixes to allow them to be differentiated between.
