i figured out how to make the camera on my w810i an infrared camera. its fairly easy, all you have to do is find some negatives from COLOR photos an find a bit at the end that is completely black and cut out a square the size of the camera and slip it in between the camera and the backplate (notice the black square on the backplate in the picture). sorry bout the image quality its from my isight on my computer

if anyone knows how to take apart the camera on the w810i i could take out the IR cut filter thats usually right in front of the snsor in the camera (the filter that filters out infrared light), then the photos would be brighter and more dramatic

also is there any way to edit the cam drive to work better in constant lowlight conditions since theres a dark filter over the lens?

here is a photo i took with the infrared filter on my w810i with the stock cam driver, its a bit dark out now so i will upload a better, sharper one tomorrow.

also, heres a infrared photo (converted to B&W) taken with a full slr camera or those of you that dont know what infrared photography looks like:

in infrared, organic materials such as plants cotton cloth etc show up almost white and usually the sky looks very dark

Nice, pretty neat mod, and an ingenious way of achieving it. So, what exactly do I cut out and put over the lens? I was confused by that bit.

go find some photos youve gotten developed, they should come with the negatives (the actual film) usually theres a bit at the end thats completely exposed (completely black) cut this out and put it over the lens

see the little scraps of film in the photo..

If you got a little more adventurous you could modify a w800 back plate and use the shutter for your infrared lens :p, then you could flick infrared on and off quick and easy without the need of risking damaging your phones camera module while taking it apart to fit the lens .

I might actually have a go at this :good:.

thats a cool idea, ill go see where i can get one

the benefit of putting th filter on internally is you can replace the ir pass filter (which filters out infrared light) so the photos would be true ir and would look better and be far better exposed...

im tryin to figure out where to buy the the camera module s i can cut it open an modify it

I guess thats true, but were talking about a phone remember , its never gonna be true IR, and its way more trick to have both a normal cam and IR even if its a little less truer :p.

If i put my hand over a camera lens and take a snap will i get a total black negative, or am i backwards and need to point a torch at the lens to get a black negative? (just be nicer to have more negative to mess with )

all you ahve to do is take some unexposed film and "ruin" it by taking it out of the camera without respooling it into the film canister...or leave the lens open for like a minute in the bright sun to completely expose it

well ill get a w800 back and a w810 camera when i get some money and start modding!

So i can just take a camera film and just rip it open without taking any pix and use that?

And happy modding.

sorry for double posting but i took some photos today with the infrared, they came out ok, kinda grainy (prolly from the film grain), and not totally infrared, but then again its a piece of film so its not gonna be perfect.

im not quite sure if there is any point in furthering this experiment, if anyone has any idea how to improve the sharpness/exposure probems or anything else im all ears.

it was a pretty good (and FREE!) mod..pretty happy with myself, still might try to mod a w800 back so i can choose ir or normal

i would like to figure out how to take out the ir pass filter...then i could put a real ir filter in instead and it would look sharp and so much better...

the PHONE camera already sees Infrared without anything over the lense too ... put it into camera mode and point your tv remote/stereo remote etc at the phones camera and press and hold any button on the remote and you will see the Infrared beam/light of the remote thats usually invisible to the naked eye ;)

try it and see :)

This photo is a negative, not an actual infrared photo, you would have to filter the light so only infrared comes through to achieve this effect
